Message from the Mayor

Welcome

As Mayor of this two-time "All-America" city, I welcome you to the City of Lumberton, North Carolina website. The City of Lumberton is located on the Lumber River in southeastern North Carolina. The river derived its name from the extensive timber harvesting and transporting done in the 1700s.

History

The City of Lumberton, incorporated in 1859, located on the Lumber River in southeastern North Carolina, has a long history of economic and cultural significance to the southern coastal plains. Lumberton was recognized and designated as the County Seat in 1787 and is by far the largest municipality in Robeson County. Lumberton experienced acceleration in growth following World War II and is home to a diversified array of internationally owned companies. The City takes pride in its contributions to the cultural and economic history of the region, and with strong citizen involvement, has been active in recent years in refurbishing its historic area.

Award Winning City
Lumberton received All-America City awards in 1970 and 1995. An extensive, and on-going, downtown revitalization effort resulted in Lumberton being re-designated in 2005 as a North Carolina Main Street Community. In 2010, the city became the first North Carolina Certified Retirement Community and continues this designation today. These recognitions are testaments to Lumberton's balanced, comprehensive approach to development and its commitment to quality living.

Chief among Lumberton's many assets are its convenient location, natural beauty and mild climate. Lumberton enjoys a strategic central East Coast location and is halfway between New York and Florida on I-95, and the I-74 corridor offers an east-west passage -- complimented with excellent trucking rail, nearby major airports, and easy deep-water access. To enjoy an occasional change of scenery, you do not have travel far. North Carolina's beautiful Atlantic coast beaches, scenic Appalachian mountains, and urban areas are all within a short drive. Modern healthcare facilities, excellent educational institutions, convenient parks and recreational sites, friendly neighborhoods with affordable housing, reliable and efficient public services, and a broad range of art and cultural activities make for enjoyable, comfortable living.

Lumberton is family focused with a number of great annual events such as the National Night Out, National Day of Prayer, Rumba on the Lumber, and Alive After Five, a summer concert series. In December, we have an annual Festival of Trees, Christmas Parade, and Christmas Tree Lighting in downtown Lumberton.
