Lumberton Advances with AMI Project to Improve Utility Services
Lumberton, NC – The City of Lumberton has completed the specifications for its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, marking a significant step toward modernizing its utility services. The project has been advertised, and the bids are due by January 15, 2025. Staff will review submissions for compliance and present the bid tabulation and recommendations to the City Council in February. Following the Council's approval of the bid, the City will seek financing proposals from local banks, which will then be submitted for review and approval by the Local Government Commission.
Once operational, the new AMI system will enhance city services with key capabilities including fixed-based automatic meter reading, two-way communications with electric and water meters, remote monitoring, and real-time outage notifications. The system will also support advanced data analytics, leak detection for water meters, remote electric meter disconnections, prepayment services, and a customer portal.
The project will replace approximately 12,000 water meters and 11,920 electric meters (9,516 residential and 2,404 commercial) with modern, smart meters. This upgrade will transition the City from manual meter reading to an efficient, automated solution, improving accuracy and customer service.
